Constipation can lead to serious illness

Constipation is a very common health issue in our society. It can be an acute issue or a chronic issue and if it’s a chronic issue, it can lead to serious health problems. Why is constipation so prevalent? What are the main causes of constipation?

The number one cause of constipation is the processed food that most folks are eating. This processed food is not food, it’s food like substances. (FLS) I coined this phrase last year while talking to a friend and expressing my concern and utter shock at all the FLS around us. This processed food is not recognized by the body and it’s void of any good bacteria, enzymes, and vitamins and minerals. The body has a hard time digesting this processed food and this leads to an imbalance in the micro-biome or bacteria in your gut. The bacteria are largely responsible for creating the perfect environment for creating and forming a health bowel movement. When the micro-biome is weakened, constipation sets in.

Other causes of constipation are stress, low stomach acid and taking too many pharmaceutical drugs. Stress can put your body in the sympathetic nervous system and this causes your body and mind to be on high alert for danger and this shuts down the digestive system and revs up your adrenaline, your heart rate and your respiratory system. Sadly, many people are in this sympathetic state most of the time and this hampers the digestive system.

Chronic constipation can lead to immune system problems, auto-immune diseases, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, etc., headaches and migraines, fatigue, brain fog and many other health issues.

The best solutions to end the unhealthy cycle of constipation are to eat real food, reduce stress levels, decrease or eliminate pharmaceutical drugs and to move your body in a way that you enjoy. Best foods to eat: avocados, coconut oil, olives and olive oil, pastured raised meats, eggs, steamed green vegetables, home made vegetable juice, sauerkraut, fruit, but not too much fruit and kombucha tea. Nutritional supplements consisting of probiotics, enzymes, digestive bitters and if needed, HCL with Pepsin will be helpful. Gillette Nutriton offers an amazing Probiotic/Enzyme supplement called B-Pro. Here is the link to B-Pro.

RAW EGG POWER!

Once deemed healthy and then not, the egg is back, even with approval from modern medicine, not that modern medicine ever influences me when it comes to nutrition.

Fried in coconut oil, scrambled, sunny side up, over easy, hard boiled, soft boiled, poached, omelet style, with avocado, on your head (a great moisturizer and conditioner), raw in fresh squeezed orange juice, raw in a fruit smoothie, raw in raw milk, raw on top of a cooked bowl of rice, millet or quinoa, raw in a glass (a la Rocky style), on your skin for sun burn, bug bites and rashes, in a casserole, deviled, or even green eggs and ham, eggs are back and eggs are a wonderful and healthy food.

The biggest myth is the cholesterol contained in eggs. Yes, eggs contain cholesterol, but cholesterol from raw or properly cooked food does not raise cholesterol levels and it does not cause heart disease. Your liver produces cholesterol every day and cholesterol is needed for cellular health, especially cellular membrane function, hormone production, brain function, vitamin D conversion and a strong and effective immune system. Most of us need some cholesterol food, found in eggs and other animal products, to aid the liver in effectively doing its task; plus, the best sources of Vitamins A, D, K, and B12 and the minerals zinc and iron are found in eggs and other animal fats.

Eggs are best raw if you want every ounce of nutrition it offers, but anyway you want them, they are a healthy part of a good diet. Packed with 60% fat and 40% protein, lecithin, iron, calcium, sulfur, phosphorus, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, selenium, magnesium and many other nutrients; eggs are a powerhouse.

If eaten raw, eggs aid in cellular structure and permeability, hormone production and balance, toxin removal, energy production, increased immunity, increased brainpower and focus and increased libido. From my experience and observation, raw eggs are most effective in removing toxins from the body and improving brain function. The reason eggs are so powerful for brain health is choline, a key component of the neuro-transmitter acetylcholine that helps with memory and intuition. It also helps with skeletal muscle movements. The reason eggs are so effective in removing toxins is cholesterol, protein and sulfur. These three components are very important and needed by the liver to perform its detoxifying actions.

Of course, eggs that are from healthy farms that allow the chickens to have access to the great outdoors to eat grass and insects are far superior to the factory-farmed eggs. If you buy local eggs, take notice of how the yolk changes from a yellow color to an orange color as the summer approaches and the chickens can feast on grass and insects. Factory farm yolks are very pale yellow in comparison and do not change color as the chickens stay indoors year round and eat industrial chicken feed. Yay to the local egg and here in Denver we have lots of local farmers with healthy eggs from healthy chickens. Go local and support your local egg farmer at the various farmers markets and the many community-supported agriculture partnerships.

Kombucha Tea

Speaking of refined sugar, popular “sweet tea” does not conjure up feelings of health and healing, unless we are talking about Kombucha Tea, the big wave of health that is in every health food store across the nation. Is Kombucha just another fad, or a real health elixir?

Kombucha is the real deal and a healthy and tasty drink that provides energy, many vitamins and minerals, good bacteria and enzymes for digestive health and organic acids, one of which is Glucuronic acid that aids the liver in the detoxification process. Kombucha Tea is a biological active product fermented with a living culture to become a natural living food high in enzymes. The fermentation process of Kombucha leaves it naturally sparkling and virtually sugar free.

Being in Colorado, I took the opportunity to visit High Country Kombucha, in Eagle, to see their operations and how they make the kombucha tea and all the different varieties, like Aloe, Chai Spice, Wild Root, Passion Flower, Ginger, etc.. The origins of kombucha tea is thought to have started in the Far East, as far back as two thousands years. The first recorded use was in China in 221 BC during the Tsin Dynasty.

If you want to save some money and not add more glass bottles to the waste stream, you can make your own Kombucha at home. Use organic refined (but not bleached) sugar and organic black tea, bags or loose. You are adding anti-oxidants to the process through the use of healthy green, black or white tea leaves. The kombucha culture looks like a beige or white rubbery pancake and it is often called a scoby which stands for symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts. The culture feeds on the sugar and black tea to create all its healthy benefits. The process is simple and you will have your kombucha to drink in 7-15 days. Visit kombuchacultures.com or organic-kombucha.com to read and see the step by step directions and/or order your kombucha culture. High Country Kombucha is the best commercially made kombucha on the market and it’s available in various health food stores across the country. www.hckombu.com

The Power of Juicing!

juicing_for_energyIt seems that juicing has become a huge part of the natural health industry and I have mixed reviews on this trend for several reasons. Fresh juice made at home or at a juice bar or health food store can be very beneficial if the correct types of vegetables are being juiced. On the other hand, fresh juice can be harmful if certain vegetables and fruits are being juiced.

Starting with the healthy way to juice, the vegetables to be juiced need to be low in sugar content and high in vitamins, minerals and enzymes. The best vegetables are celery, cucumber and leafy greens such as kale, lettuce, parsley or cilantro. Herbs that can be added for a powerful effect consists of ginger root, turmeric root and burdock root. Until you can appreciate the taste of this low sugar juice, you can add 2-3 carrots or beets and some fresh lime or lemon juice. Low sugar fresh made juice will flood the cells with oxygen, enzymes, vitamins and minerals. This type of juice is the best way to get many vitamins and minerals and it’s far better than any supplement. Fresh juice will also increase your energy levels, have a mild cleansing effect and we all need some cleansing, aid in digestion, hydrate your cells and your overall body better than water or any other beverage and have a positive effect on the cardiovascular and circulatory system.

The unhealthy way to juice, consists of high sugar vegetables and fruits and sadly, most people juice this way because most people are addicted to sugar. Carrot juice, beet juice or fruit juice or any combination is way too high is sugar and will cause spikes in blood sugar, which in turn will cause high insulin levels and possibly high cortisol levels. When this two hormones are elevated, the body will store much of this sugar as fat. Too much sugar can also cause inflammation, digestion problems, yeast infections and a weak circulatory system and brain fog.

Fresh juice is very helpful in our polluted society, but the juice has to be low sugar and full of vitamins and minerals to obtain the healthy benefits that our body needs.
